Plasti Dip Rubber Coating For Gloves
|

Greetings GoldGrubbers,
I returned from Buchanan, Georgia a few weeks back, after my second trip, and my new neoprene deep sea gloves were showing some REAL stress from digging and throwing rocks all day!
I had to take a needle and thread and stitch up some of the holes and seams coming apart. I picked up a can of PLASTI DIP multi-purpose rubber coating at Lowes to repair them with. Only cost about $6 a dipping can, in the spray paint section. It's the stuff you normally dip pliers and screwdriver handles and such into to get a new rubber grip surface.
It's advertised to stay flexible, dry fast and won't crack. Well, I have two coats on the damaged areas now and it actually looks like good stuff!
I'll try to post a post-dredging trip report on this PLASTI DIP and tell you if it lived up to its claims and worked or not to extend the life of my dredging gloves....
Anyone else use this or a similar material?
Randy :)

C-17A, It actually works better if applied before they get into bad shape... It does a fair job and will help for a short time, depending on how sharp the rocks you are working with are!!! I use regular work gloves over the diving gloves, as they are cheaper and easier to through away when they start splitting and tearing...

Twig/al,
Good advice! Unfortunately, I had thought these heavyduty deep sea dive gloves would have lasted longer than they did.........but you know how it goes...
I simply forgot how much work and how rough these rocks can be in the stream bed.
I do like the work gloves over the good gloves idea!
Let you know how my "repair" went.
Randy

Randy,
I know a lot of people that swear by using "Aqua Seal" which you can get at all dives shops and online, just coat your gloves where they wear the most, and you can use the rest on any repairs to your wetsuit.

GoldGrubbers,
O.K. Here's the report I promised. I went prospecting to Buchanan, GA, again, and I have to admit that this stuff really worked out!
I spent 9 hrs throwing rocks and basically abusing these gloves I had temp repaired with this Plasti Dip compound.
For all the abuse only one finger wore out to where I was showing the soft neoprene material. That was really amazing given the 100s and 100s of rocks I threw and moved and such.
Next time I'll "precoat" a new pair........sould make them last WAY longer that way.
Bottm line: Double thumbs up!
