I have a question for everyone...
We all know that mercury is dangerous if handled and stored in an unsafe way...
What is the safest way to store mercury???
This is a question I have been asked several times and I am not sure I know the answer myself!!! So I am asking one of the most knowledgeable sources I know...

I am not sure, but I had about a 50 oz plastic bottle of it in my little wood shed out back for years. It began to get brittle and I got nervous about having that much Mercury hanging out in my rural neighborhood barn. I had some RTV sealant on the 2x4 above it that bust at some point and it sealed the bottle to the shelf and the side of the barn. As I tried to pry it loose, the bottle started to crack. I ended up cutting the 2x4 out, but managed to not need a HAZMAT team, lol. Until I got gold fever I never really had a use for it and gave it to a friend and it still sits on his shelf in a newer container. I'd be interested to hear also how people store it and now that I know people who can use it for something, maybe I'll get it back.

Tom,
I have read that the safest way is to put it in a sealed container, and then put that container in another container filled with water and then seal that container, this way if any mercury escapes from the first container it is contain under water to prevent the mercury from vaporizing.
Most people say that they use glass containers (people love to look at mercury for some reason), but I think that is unsafe in case of it breaking, I think that a thick plastic container would be best and still let you look at it.

Gentlemen: I store my Hg as follows:
In a tempered glass container ( hit it with a hammer - it won't even crack ) It was given to me from a lab tech at a commercial glass plant. This container is buried in sand in a stainless jug and the whole works is safely underground. If I have to get to it, might take me about ten minutes or so. Einstein said that time is an illusion - so better safe than sorry. Oh, yeah the Hg itself is under about three inches of H2O. I check the works every few months, but there it stays until or if I ever need it again.
