Stick out tongue [:P] Maine Gold Trip # 2 -- 27/28 May 08

Greetings GoldGrubbers,

Well, I had the no-notice chance to drive 5 hrs up and 5 hrs back from Byron, Maine. The reason was my wife misplaced her diamond engagement ring on our trip over Memorial Day weekend, and she thinks the most likely place she "lost" it was there sunning/picnicing on the Swift River when I was prospecting. So, I blasted back up there and took my White's MXT detector........hoping and praying to be lucky enough to find it in one of 3 locations we un/loaded the Jeep, and where we ate our picnic lunch on the bedrock by the river's edge. Alass, no luck. :( I detected all areas 3 times over, working a different grid pattern each time, and then did 2 mark-1 eyeball looks in every crack, crevass and low area. So, we'll just have to see it someone finds it and trys to return it. Dee has her full name engraved on the inside.

Since I had no luck on the lost ring, I set up shop gold prospecting to get some "fun" out of the otherwise unfun trip. This time I brought my larger 2 inch "Deserdog" hand dredge to get really deep in these holes worn in the bedrock. I was able to work two smaller holes first, getting about 4 buckets of aggreagte, and sluicing them in my Wolf Trap sluice. Feeling pretty good, I went to work on this smaller hole high up on the bedrock and soon found it was really deep....and I pulled out a HUGE amount of old rusty nails, spikes, iron bits and even an old heavy horse shoe! I was feeling pretty darn good, as if this hole had this much heavy metal I MUST be getting some gold too. Right? I posted a pick of all the iron and gold I got out of this one hole.

After lunch I worked 2 smaller holes up stream, but don't think I got a lot of gold. My last endeavor was to lower myself into this hole that was about 2 feet around and see if I could work it. The problem was it was about 4 feet deep, with the right side wall at my shoulders with me standing in it! I could just barely squat doen inside it and feel the rocks below with my right or left hand. Talk about a tight fit. If only someone could lower me down by my feet!

Anyways, I was able to eventually get to and throw out the 4 inches of round rocks covering the sand/gravel, and after about 1 hour I had only one bucket of gravel to sluice....and admittedly, I was pooped out. So, I sluiced it up, packed up and came home.

Still have 1/2 a 2 gallon lucket of cons to pan out. Will post a final gold pic.

The Swift River was amazingly beautiful, the day cool with light breezes and the water crystal clear. Awesome!

Randy

C-17A, Sorry about the ring... Not having a good idea of the last place she actually had it, makes it almost impossible to find... Maybe you can find enough gold to just make her a "new" ring!!! I don't know if I would trust anyone to hold your feet, while hanging into that hole!!! They may see some gold and get excited and turn loose!!! lol....

Twig,

I was really hoping me and my MXT could find it........as I have had great luck in the past with my MXT........finding coins, jewelry, etc.

With all my detecting, I have to conclude it wasn't lost where we thought it was, or it was found by someone already, or rolled into the river's raging waters.

A 1 1/2 carat, round, brilliant cut, diamond solitare ring isn't a small loss to us....especially the emotional significance to my wife. We'll just hope and pray it's found by a person, some day, that wants to be a hero, and not a person that wants a quick buck at a pawn shop or a low buck sale on eBay.

Regardless, stuff happens........and material items, like rings, sometimes get lost. Only good thing is her name "Dedra K. Witham" is engraved inside, so she's very easy to locate on the interet...by peoplefinder.com, etc.

A very generous finder's fee is offered........

Randy

Ain't that something??? Some folks have no shame and will use any imaginable excuse to go gold grubbin' LOL.

Seriously Randy, Sorry to hear about your wife's ring. Too bad you didn't get lucky. Another great report from our own

Herschel,

No luck on the lost engagement ring yet....was hoping it might be found and we'd get a call....

Yep, for 5 hrs up and back I took my prospecting stuff to get some fun out of the deal :) As I dug and sluiced I kept pondering other places to go detect and look.........expanding my search. So, it was a "tactical" opportunity in both respects.

Hey, want to help me dig rocks/gravel out of pot holes in maine??? :)

I'd love to dig rocks outta pot holes, but Stine Lumber ain't gonna let me go for any length of time, and it'd be a tough weekend trip for me. You'd have to fly down and pick me up, then fly me back by Monday morning.

Herschel,

Well, I have no C-17s to fly...........since I am at school..........so, we'll just have to push off that prospecting date into the future.

BUT, when I get to Robins, GA, you'll be a lot closer. Maybe I can pry you out of your lumber job and into a creek in Georgia!!

Randy id post a notice in that area or with someone that maintains the area or the police or park police and remind them of the reward with your contact info.... yes it would really be a sweet deal to recover your wifes wedding ring and the stories and good feelings that would come with it. good luck!
