Hey Garry,
I know what you mean about the hunters. I was arrowhead hunting yesterday, and heard a shot REAL close just to my right up on a little bluff. Never did see the hunter, but it did scare the #^*# out of me.
Speaking of hunting leases, maybe some of us N Al/S TN guys oughta kick in some money and try to lease some land in your area and see what's there. Get enough people diggin and dredgin, might find a nice deposit. It's nice to dream anyway, Anthony

Talking about hearing shots.... About 13 or 14 years ago, I was living in Clemson SC. I did a lot of bowhunting up at Issaqueena Trail... one day I was sitting in my stand, when I heard a gunshot. The bullet passed me close enough that I could hear it spinning in the air and cutting tree limbs! At that time, I had been hunting for 7 or 8 years, So it was a sound I was familiar with and wasn't too concerned about (by the time you hear it it has already passed). But, on this day, it was not just a single shot! I blew off the first couple of rounds thinking surely there would not be more random bullets coming that close. I WAS WRONG!! After about 6 or 7 shots I started to get nervous... I JUMPED OUT OF MY STAND (about 14 feet to the ground), and started digging a fox hole behind the tree I had been sitting in. Three hours later (when it finally got dark) there had been 247 rounds pass close enough that I could hear them cut the air and see leaves and braches cut by them. It turned out, that I was directly behind a shooting range (about 400 yards) that was on private land, and that I did not know was there! I never hunted in Issaqueena again!!!
I've been doin' so much, with with so little, for so long.... I can do almost anything, with nothing!!!!

Had my ass puckered tight enough to make coal into diamonds!!! It's one thing to get shot at by a man that can see you (you can get his attention... and he might stop shooting).... But when a fellow is 400 yards away (through heavy timber) and has no idea that your there, and he has no idea that his bullets aren't stopping where they were intended to stop... all you can do is hunker down, wait for dark, and PRAY!
I've been shot at (accidentally) on numerous occations, and have been shot at (on purpose) more than once. But, the only time I was truely afraid of dying was that time up in Isaqueena. The other times I was more afraid that I would be forced to defend myself. I was put in that position a couple of times... I stood down a man who was armed with a .50 cal. muzzleloader, after he shot at me for being where he wanted to hunt. I was 15' foot up a tree and he fired a shot into the tree 2' over my head. I jumped out of the tree and made it to him before he could reload his muzzleloader....I stood him down with only a bow and arrows in my hand! I think he expected for me to back down because I only had a bow... he literally pissed his self when he saw that 31" arrow with the 1 1/2" wide Zywickey Black Diamond broadhead on the end of it... 3 feet from his face... at full draw!!! I actually watched this man flip me off, raise his rifle, aim at me and fire!! To this day... I can not explain why I did not put an arrow through his head... every fiber of my being wanted to... and I knew I had the legal right to use deadly force (in the State of SC). But, for some unknown reason, the hand of God stopped me from doing it.
Anyway... I guess, I told both of those stories to drive home the dangers of being in the woods with hunters that you do not personally know. I would never go into the deer woods during hunting season without some kind of weapon (rifle, pistol, bow, something)... especially public land!!! There are people out there who will shoot at you... just for crossing their path! I don't even go out unarmed on the private lands that I lease... Trespassers are some of the worst ones for shooting at you!
I've been doin' so much, with with so little, for so long.... I can do almost anything, with nothing!!!!

algolddigger,
You are going to have to have a very big electric pump to come close to what the output of your normal gas engine/pump is capable of putting out, and a lot of batteries.
I don't know if it will be possible to do.
You need to look at the "GPM", of your gas powered pump, and try to get close to that in an electric pump, most electric pumps are rated "GPH", and that is a big difference than "GPM".
Let us know what your output of the gas pump is, and I will check around to see what electric pumps are out there.
Maybe if you could find a quieter muffler for your engine that would be a better way to go.

WOW... that's alot for a 4". My 4" dredge runs on a 5.5HP with only 275 GPM pump. My 5" Triple only carries an 11HP and a pump that does 475 GPM. If you need quiet... I would look into down sizing to a smaller highbanker, if you have to go electric... that would decrease your need for water and allow you to get by with smaller motors, pumps and batteries... also the smaller you get the more likely it becomes that a solar system could recharge the batteries as they were being drained.
But the best way would probably be to quiet down what you've got. They make mufflers that can be "chained" together end to end, each one making it quieter. But, you have to be careful... each one you add, adds back pressure in the engine.
Another option is to use a "Quiet Muffler" here is a link to some.

Hey, I finally got this thing to let me log in. I live outside on Nashville and am debating heading to AL to try some panning. How far outside of Huntsville is there gold. We usually hit up Coker Creek and are looking for a lesser drive.

Hi all I finally got this thing to let me in Thought I would never get back. I guess you all have been wondering how it's been going well it's been great. Can't tell you what I have found. But will give you some good advice (don't store your gold in a mason jar because the glass can't stand that much weight) I now use coffee cans. Have any of you heard of some stuff that you mix with water and pour it in a hole drilled in a rock and it expands and bust the rock? I have used it before but can't remember the name or wed add
