Geeked [8-|] MXT at the beach -- coin finding machine!

Greetings Detectorists,

I recently completed a clean sweep of a stretch of beach here on "Third Beach" that used to have a large U.S. Navy beach house on it. I don't know exactly how long it was there, but a couple in their upper 60's stopped by to see what I was up to and curious if I had found anything. In my converstaion I learned the old Navy beach house was torn down "about 5 or 10 years ago", and that it had been there as long as they could remember....

The neat part about this area closer to the dunes than the water was the strong winds we've had this winter has really eroded and sandblasted the area real well, and a lot of rocks and building debris litered the whole area, making the layout easier to see. Plus it removed about 6 to 10 inches of sand "overburden".

I went out for about 2 hrs on 3 days....sweeping the area in box patterns from different directions. Good thing, as I found I had missed coins each time, however, my "targets" decreased significantly each time!

In the end I found lots of iron, some aluminum pieces, and about 4 old spoons and a porceline door knob. As to coins I ended up with my first 3 silver coins--a 1952 quarter, a 1949 Roosevelt dime and a 1936 Mercury dime. The oldest was a 1904 "V" nickel and a 1929 Buffalo nickel and 1953 nickel. I found a 1946, 1950, 1953-D and 1959 penny. Also, found about 6 wheaties so thin and eroded I could not make out their dates. Several nickels in the same eroded shape. None are collector items for sure...

I also found about 8 modern clad quarters, about 3 newer nickels, 8 newer dimes and about 10 newer pennies....

The strange thing here, in this salty sand, my White's MXT often showed the older coins as a VDI of about 52, which showed "screwcap". I learned to dig everything! Quarters were quarters 95% of the time. Maybe as they were so eroded they didn't have the metal to register a VDI of 74 for a penny or 26 for a nickel??

In the end my MXT was a great tool for seeing the coins past all that iron junk...

I posted 3 pics of my 2nd outing on the Forum.

Happy detecting! Randy

Randy, It is best to dig everything that vdi's 0 and above.. When a coin is on the fringe of detection or laying edgewise the vdi will read a lower number... When you find prevailent trash remember the vdi for it and pass it up.. With the M-6 I don't dig a nickle signal above 20 as it will be a pull tab..
You had a great time detecting and found some silver and a V!! Keep at it!!

Ray,

Went to a local park today with a buddy and we found a few coins. About 6 clad dimes, 1 nickel, and 10 pennies.

The two neatest finds were a 1935 wheatie and later a 1945 wheatie penny. Both were in Very Fine condition, with the top line of the wheat sheaves visible. Very strange that these two very old pennies were in the fairly new bark of this city park with all the later 1980s-2000s clad coinage.

I gave them both to by buddy, Jim. He's gone detecting with me several times and I wanted him to have a couple of cool old coins. He was all smiles........

Found one kid's ring..........but when I dug it up I thought I had my first big gold/diamond ring.........until I cleaned off all the bark/slop from it, and saw it had no 14Kt inside.......oh well. It was metal and looks to be gold plated...

Can't wait until my next outing :) You never know what you are going to find!!

Randy

Randy it sounds like you have figured out the learning curve on the MXT. I hope to buy one soon.
