Restore military bonuses

It’s too bad the president has seen fit to veto bonuses, including enlistment and reenlistment bonuses for our military. What makes it even more reprehensible is that he did it at the last minute so that Congress could not act until it reconvenes after January 15.

Actions speak louder than words, and I feel that the president has shown his true feelings by this action. It shows contempt and little regard for those who serve our county.

I truly hope that Congress has the courage to stand up and override the president’s action. After all, if they can vote themselves a hefty raise, they can certainly stand up for our brave men and women who risk life and limb to serve and protect our country all over the world. Remember it is a demokrat majority, maybe this time they can do something right.

socalgold, Don't be too quick to jump on the President... Without reading the whole bill, the Democrats have been "adding on" things to make the President veto them and to make him look bad... I bet in the next day or so the truth will come out....

The only difference is 1/2 of one percent additional pay raise. The military automatically got a 3.0 percent raise on 1 January without the bill.

The reason the President vetoed H.R. 1585, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 ("NDAA"):

(sorry about how long the link is)

"One provision in the bill - section 1083 - would have significantly amended current law (the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act) in ways that would imperil Iraqi assets held in the United States, including reconstruction and central bank funds. If enacted, Section 1083 would permit plaintiffs' lawyers immediately to freeze Iraqi funds and would expose Iraq to massive liability in lawsuits concerning the misdeeds of the Saddam Hussein regime. The new democratic government of Iraq, during this crucial period of reconstruction, cannot afford to have its funds entangled in such lawsuits in the United States. Once in place, the restrictions on Iraq's funds that could result from the bill could take months to lift, and thus Section 1083 cannot become law even for a short period of time.

We are consulting with the leadership of the Congress on the need for a modification to H.R. 1585 to prevent these effects on our close ally Iraq. The NDAA includes authorization for a 0.5 percent additional pay raise for our Nation's troops, on top of the 3 percent increase that will go into effect on January 1 without the NDAA. As soon as possible upon Congress's return in January, the Administration will work with Congress to enact the NDAA adjusted in a manner that protects Iraqi funds in the United States and that ensures that the additional pay raise for our troops is retroactive to January 1."

Brian called and straightened me out already guys, but thanks.

I hate all the pork

Isn't it funny how they can give themselves 6% raise and everybody else 1/2 that. What is wrong with this picture?
