M-6 find 2 pocket spills in photo section
Reply Quote
Well during this warm spell(67 yesterday) I walked down to the corner where I have permission to detect a 1880's house..When I entered in the yard I was greeted by one of their beagles wanting to dig with me . The first signal (we) dug was a all brass winchester No.10 12 gauge shotshell in great shape!! The dog was excited as I was!! As I continued to dog lost interest with the usual crappe'..
I dug a 1940 wheatie and gave it to the woman who owns the house (I give  her some nicknack's type diggings , spoons, keys, and such) and she told me she was building a shadow box for the finds I was giving her.I replied, "No problem" and how much I appreciated her letting me play in the yard.. Not ten swings later I dug a coaster at 4" weird item for me.. (Cleaned it up so she could have it.) I heard something strange in my head phones very quite,  never heard anything like it, and at my feet was a chicken!! A pet chicken that followed me for the entire time I was there.. Must of been a good luck mojo chicken so thats what I called it Mojo...
I found another wheatie at 6"  this time a 52 and that seems to be the depth I find the most of them at..
The M-6 hit a nickle signal at 7" and it locked on with the vdi at 18.. I pulled a deep plug  and ran the M-6 over it.. At the very bottom of the plug was a nickle and I thew it in my pouch..Then I  probed the bottom at about 7" my pinpointer hit.. I loosened the soil to reveal another nickle.. I scanned the hole again and there was 2 more!!  Stuck them in my pouch and didn't look at them as they were caked with soil..Continued swinging for about 25 feet and then it happened!!!
The M-6 gave off a high tone and another and another!! I slowed way down and picked out one  dime high tone and grabbed the trigger to pinpoint it.. At 5" it seem locked on so I dug a deep plug.. Stuck my pinpointer in and a half inch down in the bottom of the hole it sounded off..Allright,  a rosie!! I always check the hole out with my pinpointer after the recovery and another signal this time a wheatie  and another right next to it!! One more time and another rosie!! I then ran the M-6 over the hole again and got a nickle at 4" at the edge of the hole so I ran the pinpointer in the side a few times and when it sounded off a buffalo appeared!!!
So from that one hole a  46 and  47 rosie, 46 and 48 wheaties, and a dateless buffalo nickle!!! I was excited!! my fist silver and first pocket spill of 2008!!! SO I THOUGHT!!!
When cleaning the nickles at home I couldn't believe it!!!
First one was a V NICKLE!!! Second one a V Nickle!! COOL!! Third one a nickle? No it not, its smaller..  As I looked I saw the shield and I thought MY FIRST TWO CENT PEICE!!!  After some help it turned out to be a SHIELD NICKLE WITH RAYS!!! Dateless but... YAY!!!!  Last one I look at ANOTHER V!!!!!   You can see from the pics that the shield nickle laying on one of the V's..
                      WHAT A POCKET SPILL!!!!
        1884,1889,1899 V's and a dateless shield nickle!!!
The first hunt of the year is going to be a tough one to surpass, but I'll give it a go!!
                      Ray

At over 800 coins I am still without the nickles and 2 cents you described. Two 1918 pennies are the oldest/rearest to date for me. So I am jealous. LOL

Cosmic years ago I found a shield nickel with rays on my own place. I did some research on it at the time and found out that the nickel with rays was minted for the first time in 1866 they took the rays off a year later... also 1866 was the first year that any nickel had ever been minted. So Id say ya made a pretty good find. The United States 1st nickel...... Buck P.S. the reason the rays were taken off is folks complained in the north that it reminded them to much of the Stars and Bars.
Be sure your right, Then go ahead...Davy Crockett

Cosmic,

Nice pics of your HUGE success! Way to go!!

That is every detectorist's dream.....to run into a cache of old coins with some history, if not value. My hat's off to you!

Please keep working that house and report any other great finds....inquiring minds want to know :)

I have found one neat, VERY worn and corroded mid-1700s King George II regal half penny......still not silver or anything else older than a 1927 Wheatie penny.

What fun! The great unknown!!
