At the dawn of railroads in the US construction was under way to lay tracks through the NC mountains down to the coast in order to transport the abundant timber that was available in the mountains. Progress was moving right along until the tracks were to be laid through the last Cherokee village in the hills. The railroad bought out all of the natives with the exception of one, a very old chief named Bowels.
Now the railroad representatives with all their power and money, bought off the local judge and got an order of eviction to have the chief removed. The sheriff took the order to the chief who still refused to move. The sheriff, being sympathetic to the chief suggested he go see the local lawyer.
That very day the chief went into town to find the lawyer and present his case, but the chief could just speak a little English, much less read. He proceeded to the first important building he came to which turned out to be the doctor's office and when greeted at the door he said, Bowels no move. The doctor gave him a bottle of liquid and told him to drink it down and come back the next day.
The chief did as the man had said and went back the next day. When greeted, he firmly said, Bowels still no move. The doctor scratched his head and gave him different bottle and told him to drink it down and come back the next day. This went on for three more days, each time the chief insisted that he would not move and the doctor kept giving him stronger and stronger medicine.
Now, first thing in the morning of the 5th day, The chief came crawling into the doctor's office as white as a sheet and weak as water. He looked up at the doctor, who he thought to be a lawyer and said, Never mind, Bowels got to move, tee-pee full of ***!
