White's MXT Detector Report
|
|
|
|
|
Greetings detectorists,
I just bought a White's MXT detector. It was billed as a good "all around" detector for coins/jewelry, relics and gold. Bought it off eBay last week for $492 excellent used. Came in the original box, with headset and papers on Friday....
Yesterday and today I took it out to 2 local elementary schools with my 13 & 10 year old daughter and son ....and man......what a blast! That thing never stopped finding coin after coin. I read the owner's manuel cover to cover, and it was easy to "figure this thing out" for coin shooting. I found a coin in the first 3 feet I walked. As I swung the detector around it just kept beeping. I thought at first it was "crazy" or out of adjustment.........well the crazy part was it was actually "right on the money"!
A nickel was a nickel, a quarter was a quarter, even a zinc penny vs a copper penny was so. Man, this thing was 95+% correct. If it showed a penny & dime at the same time, 99% it was always a dime. I could avoid the foil and pull tabs and dig only for coins. Well, actually my kids did the digging and screening. Funny, they got so tired of finding money they actually said...."dad, can we go home now?.....I am tired of finding and digging for money"!! Imagine that...........
After we cleaned out the first playground yesterday, we went to another local school today. This playground was a real gold mine, so to speak. In 2 hrs yesterday and 3 hrs today we came up with $23.60 in coins. That was mostly dimes of all things, very few pennies and about $8 in quarters and $5 in nickels. I'd guess we have over 275 coins soaking in some copper cleaner!! Have not counted them yet.
We also found one small 14Kt gold ring (my first gold jewelry find!) with a red stone and the detector actually said nickel or ring, a 6 ounce lead fishing sinker, screws, bolts, a buckel, locket and misc stuff.
So, for my very first detectoring outting, we had a fantastic experience, out of doors in the clear, cool air, admiring the birds and falling leaves.
To sum up the adventure, I am VERY impressed with the White's MXT for coin shooting so far. Can't wait to try out the other modes. The only thing was the depth seemed to be a bit off.....usually it said, like, 6 inches and we'd find the coin at a shallower depth, like 1/2 the depth.
Happy detecting!!

C-17A, My XLT will some times show a gold wedding band as a poptop... So I now dig everything!!! Sometimes the "new" detectors give a false reading about a target, because of the way it is in the ground and size of the object... Example, a ring standing up on end gives a different"look" to the detector that the same ring laying flat on its side... I know that there will be someone that disagrees with that explanation, but that is just from my experience...

I agree with Twig. I've been detecting since '73 and have proven many times that even the best detectors can be fooled, and it's usually a GOOD target that fools 'em. My advice is to play it smart and DIG IT! (Besides, it's good exercise!)

Gents,
Great advice! I'll be more inclined to dig than not....you truly just never know until you dig...

Kev,
Good for you! I know Lee will agree with me...the MXT is a great coin shooter.
My 2 kids really like finding their own money and making ME dig and screen for them!
I suggest you go to a elementary school playground or something similar to get a great first experience and learn just how many coins people/kids lose.
That second school playground we went to had a coin it seemed in every 2 square feet! Fun, fun, fun when you can't dredge or sluice....like me now.
Let me and the board know as soon as you can how it goes...

Herschel,
You are very kind..........thanks for the compliment. I try to give my stories some depth and color in a otherwise black & white world of text only!
I just posted a new picture here on the forum of my first MXT "take". 302 U.S. coins and a 14Kt gold ring to boot!
I am mapping out the local schools and already have plans to repay my detector as soon as possible with trips to the schools and maybe local parks and such.
Hope to find some older coins from the colonial period here in RI as well.........
I ordered some more cons from Brian....and asked for 2 more "Herschel Special" bags if he can swing it. We'll see if Brian has the fines to punish me to no end :)

Randy, Have you been to Whites site? They have some good basic videos on setup and using the MXT. Thats one heck of a lot off change in just 2 outings. I can't wait for mine to get here. Already watched the videos and read the manual a couple times on Whites site.

Kevin,
Have not been there yet. Saw there's a supposedly good book called "The MXT Edge" where a pro tells all about running a MXT. Have not bid on one yet.
Like I said..........go to a kid's elementary school or kid's play ground. Wow...
I went to a grown up's baseball park today and found 1,000,000 beer pull tabs, beer bottle caps and such.............and $.95 in change. Three quarters, some dimes and pennies. Cold out but lots of fun non the less.
Kids seem way more prone to losing small coin-like $$$ (change) and they don't have bad habits like drinking and smoking yet!!! This means WAY less wasted time digging junk.
I suspect the trade off is at adult areas (beach, baseball parks, football fields, campus, etc.) thay would be a lot more likely to lose a gold/diamond ring or bracelet or necklass, etc.
You will love your detector!

Herschel,
Yep.............your special bags.
True pain and reward. I imagine it like male childbirth! Hours spent slumped over the tub panning with that 150W bulb roasting me......
All thanks to you!!!

Nah, that's thanks to Brian for dreaming up a bag of -100 mesh just to have a good laugh at my expense, Then namin' it after me. Everytime Brian sees the term "Herschel Special", He gets a good belly laugh out of it.

Herschel,
no bags to be had this order...........Brian said he was out of gold that small.
He said he mad a bag for a gent that claimed to be 95% effective panning fine gold..........but Brian hasn't heard a peep since. Bet whoever this gent is he's 1). busier than he thought and 2). maybe regretting his purchase! Ha!
Hope all's well with you down South. RI is below freezing at the moment.

Your really going to like that MXT for an all around detector.
Now you'll need a DD coil. Much better coverage, and it'll help you get the maximum out of your detector.
I had the 14" elyptical for covering the beaches, with my MXT.

Hey Bob, I will be in Willimington 12-21to 24th. Maybe we could get together and hit a beach or any other place you know of. Been thinking about the DD coil but it's going to have to wait till after Christmas. I also want the small DD coil for gold detecting.
Let me kow if you are going to be around.

Hey Cosmic, The only coil I have right now is the stock 9.50. But after the first of the year that is going to change! I want one for detecting for nuggets. May have to try the story writing. If Randy starts sending in his stories he could have his dector paid for in a couple years the way he writes.
Just finished the yard work so it's time to get the toys out and go play.

I'm using a Minelab Sov. GT with a 15" WOT coil. Stories about that are no use to Whites.
All I was ever interested in was the target itself. It never mattered how deep the meter said it was.
Ive dug holes up to my elbow, to recover a dime, with the detector I have now. It was hard at first to use one that didn't have a meter, but I got used to the different tones different metals make.

Kev, I'll send you my phone number, and well see what we can come up with. My friends hammer those beaches up there pretty hard, so targets might be hard to come by.
We'll get together if you've got the time though, and do our best.
I've got two detectors, so your son will have one to use also.
