Brian,

I see in your products that you have a link to TommyDSports for their wetsuits. Have you ever tried their regulators?

Everybody else,

What is a less costly regulator to buy to convert over for our use? I am putting together my hookah system and want it cheap but not dangerous.

Hey Monky,

Went I got my dredge I bought 2 regulators from TommyD. 1 broke after about 3 to 4 uses and the other is still working afer a year, but doesn't get used much. I think you are better off to buy a brand name regulator, you get what you pay for. MY TommyD one I keep as a spare. I bought 2 used Dacor regulators off ebay and they both great and actually paid less for them then the ones from TommyD.

Thanks for the reply. Another question: Did you have to do anything to either one of the regs. for them to work with the hookah? I have read where if your hookah is in the 50/60 psi you have to change the regulator springs.

Arthur, I didn't have to change anything on mine, they worked fine. I have used 5 different regulators 2 TommyD, 2 types of Dacor and an OcenaReef and all work fine on the hookah system with no changes. I think you may have had to change the springs on older regulators but I'm not sure.

The regs I use are plain old diving regulators... I use the octopus regulators (not the primary) the octopus is less expensive and has less features. I have not had to adjust mine for the low pressure... but if you buy it from a dive shop, I would ask them if the reg you are buying has an adjustment...just in case you ever need to.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am looking at a couple of regs. on ebay that are adjustable. Hopefully, I will get a good one. One is a Dacor Pacer and another one is a Sherwood. I guess that I am in the wrong business, cause some new ones are freakin' expensive ($600+ for some models)! A regulator is a relatively simple concept, but I guess those high dollar ones have gold springs/valves or something?

I am building a 12V system that I can use for other things besides prospecting, and it will be a lot less than the Keene Hydroair ($1195), by about $1000. Theirs doesn't include the hose, battery, or reg in this price!!! I know, I know, lot of overhead. Blah

The expensive ones you are looking at are primary regulators.... you need to be looking at secondary regulators (octopus) they are the regulators that are used as backup regulators for diving and are only used when the primary malfunctions. you can pickup a NEW Octopus for around $100.
