Wedding band found and returned before daylight

Bobg 07-15-2007, 4:53 AM
I was asked yesterday to hunt up a wedding band, lost 1 week ago. I was given a good proximaty of where the drop occured and time of day.

Considering the tide rolled in and out 28 times during the week, I figured it was worth a shot to hunt the general area.

I found the ring within a very small boundary of where I was told it was.

I came within a foot of hitting the target on my first pass, as I found out looking at my scoop drag mark I had made when I did find it.

Gridding an area in the dark wasn't all that easy, going to and from the water, so I started a parralel gridding to the incoming tide, working my way up the beach.
, thinking that it might have gotten pulled down from the last two days of rough surf conditions.

It turned out to be very close to where it was dropped, about mid beach.

Low tide was at 3 AM, I got there about 3:30. The ring was found at 5:30.

One other reason I chose to hunt this early low tide was that the people who had rented the beach house, were leaving early this morning. If I were to find it, I thought it'd be nice to give it to them before they left.

Mom and dad are from W. Va. There son was the one who lost it, and he's living in Carrie NC, near Raliegh. Dad gave me a 50.00 reward. He was just amazed it was found at all, but did tell me that after we talked yesterday, his confidence was a bit restored that it could happen.

I love a happy ending

Bobg, You did a good thing!!! Their are not a lot of people that would have gotten up at 3am to even look!!! They weren't expecting to get the ring back and you weren't expecting to get the "tip"!!!

GOOD JOB!!!

Way to go Bob!!  And the more general public we help out, maybe then they'll remember that when the time comes that us prospectors, detectorists and gem/mineral collector have to really stop the fecal matter from hitting the oscillating device.  We might even get a convert or two from 'em.

I felt real bad about the first wedding band I found, and what it must have meant to the owner. I couldn't do anything about it. I had no idea where to start looking for the owner.

After seeing how happy these folks were to be able to call their son and tell him his wedding band had been recovered, I'd give any of my finds back, just to see the smiles.

I've left my info with the two rental agents at the beach, and with the local police department. They sometimes get calls to find someone to help out with folks like I met this morning.

Way to go Bobg. Sounds to me like you got your blessing just being able to help those folks. The tip was icing on the cake that made it a double blessing.

Good job Bob....And the $50 is probably more than you could have pawned the ring for anyway (unless it had a stone in it).

Pawn? I'd rather throw them all back in the ocean than pawn anything. What you've got is junk until they give you the pennies for it, then it becomes priceless.

A wedding band is priceless to the one who it was given to.

And thats a fact..... I know mine is not even replaceable.... the pair is made from gold that I mined myself..... Me, my wife, and the goldsmith.... are the olny people who have done more than touch the gold in our rings. They are absolutely priceless!!!!

Reading your post reminded me of a story I read several years ago in one of the treasure mags.  Seems that at this particular area the river  is thinned down from time to time and the detectorists hit the popular spots. Naturally!  Well, one of the fellows found a West Point graduation ring.  He was able to read the number on the inside of ther band and after a bit of research found the owner.  Or rather the parents.  Seems the ring was lost some twenty-five years or so back..Everybody had given the ring up for lost.  But when the ring was turned over to the parents, they were more than just happy.  The cadet to whom the ring belonged was lost in battle.  Great present for his parents, don't you think?

A fine story, UMI.

Class rings are the most common ones to be returned

Bob,

What a story! I just started detecting.......your story gives me some perspective on the "finds" and "saves" one can make.

I too hope that IF I find something of value like this.............I can in some way ID the item and return it to its owner.

Job WELL DONE!!

well while you all are looking, i lost a few gold nuggets, to identify them i smoothed the rough edges so if you find them
drag them across you arm, if it does not draw blood then they are the ones i marked and you can return them....call me when you find them.....
outstanding recovery and return Bob.

He's lost some nuggets alright faaus, but they were "brain" nuggets. An' ol' Abearzz is indicatin' that they were much much "sharper" than the average brain nugget, and that we're too dumb to figure it out.  It weren't "MY" influence that got him the way he is.  LOL

Abearzz,

I found several really big nuggets yesterday, but since they were obviously close to the mother lode source they were very jagged and cyrstalline.............really rough...........they scratched my arm up amazingly well and drew a tiny drop of blood.

So, I guess these nuggets stay in my polk! Ha!

All my nuggetts are real sharp too Randy. They all draw blood. If I find em Abearzz, you'll be the first to know. Hehehehehe

ABEARZZ,

I found a couple of nuggets a while back, so I had to do the right thing and test them to see if they were yours, can't keep them if they are yours!!!

So I did the arm test, it's took numerous tries, but I finally got my arm to bleed, so I guess they are not yours!!!!
