Kevin, next time I'll take you to some beaches, other than in Wilmington, if you've got the time.

Pick a lowtide morning weekend, and we'll go lootin' the sands, clear down to Myrtle beach.

Geeked [8-|] Found an old copper coin -- of some type! Re: White's MXT Detector Report

Greetings Detectorists,

It's really cold up here in RI..........woke up this morning and it was 26 degrees............so I went out metal detecting on the beach for about 2 hrs. Got a little change and a bit chilled.....to say the least.....stopped by KFC and warmed up and had some greasy chicken about noon.

Then, went up the street from my house to an OLD abandoned house and detected there for about an hour. It's a 2 story, 3 chimneys, iron front fence, looks to be late 1800s to me. REALLY falling apart and lots of trees, brush, rose bushes grown up all around it.

Found an old silver plated spoon, a bunch of junk metal and one really neat old copper coin. This coin looks to have the outline of a bust on one side and the outline of maybe someone or something in a sitting position on the back. It is a little larger than a quarter, so i know it's not an old quarter, and it has no nickel either.

I think I can make out a little lettering around the perimeter on the front if you hold it in the right light. Very corroded and worn and such..............too bad. This coin was up the street in a clearing area about 200 feet from the house. May have had nothing to do with the past occupants. This area was settled in 1639, so anything is possible over the years.

I'll have to do some more research to see if it really is a coin.......and what the markings are.

While I was detecting I had a few snow flurries blowing around, but nothing stuck.

Well, the temps have only fallen as the dry cold air from Canada sweep down tonight...............it's a balmy 15 degrees and about 20+ kts of wind. So, will have to wait to go detecting as the ground is frozen again.

Randy

Randy, Your best finds will mostly be around old houses or old gathering areas. Look up social functions from archives, like picknics along a river or farm area. If you do parks, beaches and school grounds you will find the majority of your coins but they will mostly be clad ones. Beaches offer up the best chance to find rings and other jewelry. Take a trip into the country side and start talking to some of the farmers and find out where the old churches and stores or houses were, then get permission to look there. There are more places to go than there are detectorists. Always leave it better than when you came. The old places are not that easy to work due to shrubs, grass and weeds etc. Lots of junk with the occasional "find". Some of which can make your whole day or even your best month. Honan brothers have a mining store in Biggs CA and it is loaded with some of their finds. Some very valuable and the most are just curios. I always get excited if I find an old tobacco can and the first thing I do is look inside. Nothing yet but someday........
