I took my kids out on their first gold prospecting trip here in Alaska down on the Kenai Peninsula. Wouldn't you know they had beginner's luck! I showed my daughter who is 8 how to snipe bedrock cracks and while she was doing this, I showed my son who is 10 how to dig around and under the big boulders. After a leisurely day we had classified <1/4" down and took home 15 lbs of concentrates to pan out. Altogether they found 4.8 grams of gold include a few nice pickers. Considering the fairly small effort, it was a fantastic find - and yep, now they have the gold bug too. Now we just have to wait several months until the snow melts.

Welcome, now that feeze up hit it, is also time to teach them a little hunting and trapping. That will keep them busy until break up. So much to do up there in that wonderful -80 weather. Guess I'll just stay here and suffer in this wonderful 70 temps this winter.
